Hanbury Manor Golf & Country Club

February 15th, 2008

Hanbury Manor

With its fragrant walled gardens, stately Jacobean country house and 200 acres of Hertfordshire parkland, the historic Marriott Hanbury Manor Golf & Country Club makes a lasting impression.

As London’s time honoured “Original Country Retreat”, you’ll find the obliging service and amenities expected from a 5-star luxury hotel. It’s a standard that extends from the richly panelled library warmed by an open fireplace, to 161 elegant guest rooms, each individually designed and offering the plush new ‘Revive’ bedding package and business savvy touches like high-speed Internet. Savour the award-winning dining in 2AA rosette Zodiac restaurant, serving fine cuisine in exquisite surroundings, and in Oakes, offering a contemporary flair & relaxing ambiance. Yield to the blissful pleasures of the luxury spa with Romanesque swimming pool, work out in the fitness centre or take on the par-defying PGA championship golf course.

Hanbury Manor Golf & Country Club is Hertfordshire’s most exclusive address.

The prestigious golf course was the first to be designed by Jack Nicklaus II, and still incorporates features from an earlier 9-hole course designed by the great Harry Vardon. The Course is now widely recognised as one of the best in England, with every hole being a varied and exciting challenge.

The Women’s European Open was held at Hanbury Manor in 1996, and the Men’s European Tour visited for the English Open from 1997 to 1999, with British home grown talents such as Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke among the champions. In 2001/2 the Course was presented with the ‘Following the Fairways Golf Venue of the Year’ award. Hanbury Manor remains a favourite venue for many European Tour professionals, some of whom have returned to play the course in their own time.

Hanbury Manor provides an exciting challenge for the good golfer in all seasons. From the championship tees, the course measures 7052 yards, and is a very well balanced par 72. However, due to the fact that all of the golf holes at Hanbury have at least four different teeing areas, the Course can be varied from day to day. The USGA specification sand based greens and tees provide not only excellent drainage and therefore year round playability, but also immaculate playing surfaces. Temporary tees and greens are never required and weather related closures are a rarity indeed.

Within the past few years nearly £1 million has been spent improving Course infrastructure. The largest single project has been the installation of one of the UK’s most high-tech golf course irrigation systems, ensuring that the Course remains a lush green throughout the hottest summers.

There can be few more golfing venues in Europe where old and new combines so successfully than at historic Hanbury Manor in Hertfordshire. The magnificent ‘old’ part is the site itself, which since the 19th century has been dominated by a Jacobean-style mansion and its wonderful grounds, originally included a nine-hole parkland course designed by the legendary Harry Vardon.

The ‘new’ is the conversion of the estate into Hanbury Manor Golf and Country Club. The hotel’s restoration has given visitors an elegant five-star country house hotel with outstanding facilities whilst outside the land has been redesigned into an 18-hole championship-length golf course.

The course is unsurprisingly American-style, as its designer was Jack Nicklaus II. Nicklaus junior took the best of the original Vardon course, together with former meadowland to produce a new course that not only looks beautiful but plays superbly too Hanbury Manor has hosted a number of major professional events, including the Women’s European Open in 1996 and the Men’s European Tour’s English Open from 1997 to 1999 won by Per Ulrik Johannson, Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke respectively.

The Hanbury Manor Golf Academy is home to private tuition packages, group lessons and corporate days. The academy comprises of an open-air grass tuition range, a Himalayan-design putting green, chipping greens and bunker area.

Improve your game under the supervision and direction of our qualified professionals with golf lessons at Hanbury Manor. Tailor made programs can also be created to suit your golfing needs.
