Decadent urban dwelling
Edinburgh boutique hotel Tigerlily has thrown the rule book out the window, working a bright, modern and luxe decorative theme with mosaic mirror tiles, silver, white and glass. And that’s just the reception: rooms have massive beds, the restaurant is a sprawling maze of cosy bench nooks, crystal curtains and sleek tables – and there’s even a nightclub, which attracts hip-hunting barflies like moths to the flame. Georgian Suites 1 and 12 are best for making romantic gestures, with four‑poster beds, great views, open fires, double sinks, freestanding baths and waterproof remote controls for the bathroom TV. With a huge open‑plan restaurant that is gorgeous to look at as well as hang out in, where you can select British, Mediterranean or Asian cuisine from the extensive menus this Edinburgh spot has everything under one roof.
Hotel restaurant
Tigerlily’s restaurant is surrounded by a curtain of metal beads, beneath huge chandeliers encased in outsize lampshades and is a prime people-watching location with Edinburgh’s beau monde parading by in Jimmy Choos and slinky wrap dresses. Even the waiting staff seems fresh from a model casting, which only adds to the enticing aura of film‑set glamour. The menu works an eastern‑meets‑local theme, with charred prawns and mango salsa, Aberdeen Angus beef, and an Ayrshire pork belly teamed unexpectedly with coconut rice.
Top table
The choice of seating is almost as overwhelming as the menu, but you’ll soon be feeling territorial about your own cosy breakfast corner or sofa for tea; for dinner, slink into one of the intimate little alcoves.
Room service
A selection from the à la carte menu is available 24 hours a day.
Hotel bar
Rouged up to the hilt and crystal-encrusted, seductive Lulu is the popular bar and club hidden beneath Tigerlily. DJs mix up an interesting blend of Latin, house and electro, while bartenders mix up interesting blends of the strong stuff. There’s an external heated smoking area off the downstairs bar.
