Pringles of Scotland collection, menswear spring / summer 2008
The glossy iconography of a stellar rock decade slips from assured slickness into an assertion of cultivated yet relaxed attitude. sounds and images of the late seventies filter through the collection — a slick, narrow silhouette recalls the sheen of a Roxy music aesthetic; a reflection of Iggy pop adds irreverence; the glossy high-summer heat of a sun-drenched, sun-parched Riviera permeates; all soaked in a tonal palette of luminous hockney-esque poolside coolness.
Suiting develops a definitive voice - narrow, lean silhouettes dominate. Skinny lapels on slim-cut shoulders give tailoring in fine British cloths and compact Japanese woven’s a slick edge. A skinny-lapel suit in silver silk-mix wool luxuriously evokes effortlessly sleek simplicity. Innovations in fabrication bend established rules - breezy shirting poplin in 100% cotton turns itself to lightweight, narrow-cut blazers.
Summer knitwear is deftly handled with a lightness of touch that has become Pringle of Scotland’s iconic style. Fine 18-gauge knits are layered, luxuriously translucent. Mixes of cashmere with cotton, silk, and linen offer lightness combined with perfect warmth. Signature hand knits pop in bright red and aqua blue, taking the form of covetable fine diagonal cable sweaters, fishermen’s references and cardigans. In a nod to Pringle’s unequalled heritage, diamond patterns are reworked as contemporary essentials. In casual wear, proportions are playfully exaggerated; narrow and neat mixed with loose and oversized. a skinny chino with self-fabric belt evokes a slim James dean aesthetic.
Casual shirts are narrow shouldered with sixties-inspired high tab collars in striped cottons. Conversely, oversized baggy shorts and floor-length trousers in light cotton poplin loosely drape.
